A Home Base In Portland, Oregon

Portland became the right home base for me because it gives me access to many of the things I naturally enjoy. There are older neighborhoods to walk through, independent shops to explore, gardens that change with the seasons, nearby forests, scenic drives, and enough rainy days to make home feel especially important.

I live in a comfortable older house on Portland’s east side. It is not a perfectly styled home, and I do not want it to be. It has rooms that have changed more than once, a kitchen that always gives me another improvement idea, a lawn that needs regular attention, and small corners that slowly become more useful as I understand them better.

My favorite homes feel personal rather than polished for display. I like natural wood, warm lighting, linen, practical storage, comfortable furniture, old books, simple ceramics, and things that have a clear reason for being in the room.

I also love the contrast between home and travel.

Travel gives me new colors, textures, layouts, meals, gardens, and ways of doing everyday things. Home gives me somewhere to bring those ideas back to, think about them, and decide which ones actually fit my own life.

That relationship between exploring and returning home shapes much of what I share here.

Sometimes I come across an idea while traveling and realize it would work beautifully in a small kitchen. Sometimes a hotel entryway makes me reconsider how I store shoes and bags at home. A garden path might inspire a lawn border. A quiet morning in another city might change how I think about my routine in Portland.

I pay attention to those connections because they often lead to the most useful ideas.
